CMU Professor Norman Sadeh visited Noah’s Ark Lab

Our lab was pleased to welcome Professor Norman Sadeh, currently a Professor in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, on 24th May, 2013. Prof. Sadeh shared with us his team’s research on using machine learning and statistical techniques to analyse crowd-sourced data in the mobile and social networking context. The results can be used to inform many different decision-making processes.

Noah’s Ark Lab papers accepted to ACM KDD’2013

Our lab continues to be a major research centre in data mining. We are pleased to announce that our lab had five accepted papers in the upcoming ACM KDD 2013 conference to be held in Chicago, USA. As usual, KDD is a very competitive forum. This year, KDD received 726 submissions and accepted 126 papers for an acceptance ratio of 17.4%. Our papers are as follows:

Noah’s Ark Lab welcomes Prof. Janet Hsiao and Prof. Antoni Chan

Prof. Janet Hsiao, assistant professor of the Department of Psychology at the University of Hong Kong, and Prof. Antoni Chan, assistant professor of the Department of Computer Science at the City University of Hong Kong, visited the Noah’s Ark Lab on 22nd April, 2013. Prof. Hsiao shared with us her research on human eye movement in face recognition, while Prof. Chan presented his research on clustering using hierarchical EM algorithm.

Prof. Craig Knoblock visited Noah’s Ark Lab

Prof. Craig Knoblock and Dr. Yao-Yi Chiang from the University of Southern California visited the Noah’s Ark Lab on 18th March, 2013. Prof. Knoblock is currently the Director of the Information Integration Group of the Information Sciences Institute, and Dr. Chiang is a research scientist at the same institute. Prof. Knoblock shared with us his research in the area of data integration and presented us the Karma system developed by his team at USC.

Description

Huawei’s Noah’s Ark Lab, is a new research lab in Hong Kong to focus on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Mining research. Our interests include natural language understanding and information retrieval, large-scale data mining and machine learning, social media and mobile intelligence, human-computer interaction and systems, as well as machine learning theory. We look for talents with a computer science and engineering background to join our lab as student interns or employees at all levels, including UG, PG and graduates.

Job Duty

The student intern will be involved in research projects in the following areas:

1. Research

Human Computer Interaction Design and Development
Information Retrieval and Data Integration
Distributed Computation Platform Design and Development
Cloud Platform Design, Development and Maintenance
Data Ming and Machine Learning
Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition

2. Android Development

Work on novel and interesting apps on smart phones, with potential massive distribution

3. Creative Design

Design novel and possibly revolutionary prototypes for human machine interaction

Requirements

1. Researchers

Pursuing a B.S./M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, or related fields.
Excellent programming and algorithmic skills.
Familiarity with data structures and algorithms.
Research or programming experience in the related areas a plus.

2. Android Engineer

Pursuing a B.S./M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, or related fields.
Two or more years of experience in Android app development
Good knowledge of Android platform
Experience with Android UI design

3. Creative Designer

An open and crazy mind
Hands-on experience in gadget design
Familiar with information technologies

Noah’s Ark Lab welcomes Prof. Boi Faltings and Prof. Pearl Pu

Prof. Boi Faltings and Prof. Pearl Pu, professors at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland, visited the Noah’s Ark Lab on 30th January, 2013. Prof. Faltings is the director of the AI Lab, while Prof. Pu leads the HCI group. Prof. Faltings presented to us some interesting research on truthfulness in crowd-sourcing, while Prof. Pu shared with us her project on emotion analysis in microblogs.

Dr. George Vanecek visited the Noah’s Ark Lab on 29th Jan, 2013. Dr. Vanecek is currently a senior principal researcher/architect at FutureWei Technologies, Center of Innovation. His group is currently researching Internet of Things emerging solutions for real-world perception, real-world situation modeling, context awareness and trust determination. At the Noah’s Ark Lab, Dr. Vanecek presented to us a hybrid knowledge base and perception system now being developed at his lab in Santa Clara.

The Second ICT Industry and Technology Trend Forum

Huawei organized the Second ICT Industry and Technology Trend Forum on 16th and 17th January, 2013 at the headquarters in Shenzhen. A number of world-renowned academic researchers and industry leaders gathered to share their opinions regarding the future development in ICT.

The Noah’s Ark Lab was glad to host visits of two of the speakers of the forum. Prof. Philip Yu, Professor and Wexler Chair in Information Technology at the University of Illinois in Chicago, shared with us his research projects in social network mining. In addition, Dr. Michael Zeller, CEO of Zementis, presented to us an overview of predictive analysis, which is the core business of his company.
